Late-ripening and demanding, at La Bastide Blanche it finds the terroir that lets it express its full depth: elegance, aromatic complexity, tannic structure, remarkable ageing potential for the reds, intensity and personality for the rosés.

Mourvèdre is the emblematic grape of the Bandol appellation.
It gives structure to every red wine and plays an active part in the identity of the appellation's rosés.
A demanding variety, it finds in Bandol the ideal conditions to reach a slow, complete ripeness: Mediterranean heat, poor soils and maritime influence. This rare combination makes it a grape of great quality, capable of producing powerful, complex wines built for ageing.
In Bandol red wines, Mourvèdre makes up at least 50 % of the blend, guaranteeing their unique style, and at least 20 % in the rosés.
At La Bastide Blanche, these proportions are even higher, ranging from 80 to 85% for red wines and from 70 to 75% for rosé wines. The distinctive character of our wines makes them truly one-of-a-kind.

Le cépage
Mourvèdre is a late-ripening variety, perfectly suited to hot, dry climates. It develops a deep root system that lets it withstand periods of drought.

Its aromatic profile combines black fruits, spices, garrigue notes and sometimes an iodine touch linked to the nearby sea.

Vinifying Mourvèdre requires great technical precision because of its high concentration of tannins and matter.
Direct pressing is preferred, to extract fine, balanced juices. After settling, fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks preserves freshness and aromatic expression.
Bandol rosés made from Mourvèdre stand out for their structure and ageing potential — far from light aperitif styles.
The grapes are generally destemmed then vinified in tanks with a maceration of several weeks. Extraction is controlled through regular pump-overs and punch-downs.
Ageing then takes place in oak foudres for at least 18 months, to preserve the expression of fruit and terroir without marking the wine excessively with wood.
No, for now there’s no Mourvèdre in Bandol’s white wines ! After recently tasting some very interesting wines made from gray Mourvèdre and white Mourvèdre, we’ve decided to graft these two grape varieties on a trial basis in 2027 at La Bastide Blanche. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing the character of our wines.
